Agri-GIS

C-SAG is developing a  GIS based Agriculture Knowledge Engine (Agri-GIS) –  an advanced Spatial Analytics (SA) system in support of Agriculture.  This activity is being taken up in collaboration with Tata Trusts.

The Agri-GIS engine would provide the agriculture sector with an advanced knowledge base and have the potential to solve the challenges being faced by the farmers. At the outset, the Agri-GIS engine could focus on enhancing agricultural productivity at the farmers’ level and thereby enable farmers to increase their productivity and income.

The Agri-GIS Application will initially be developed and rolled out in three districts of South Odisha, with a clear objective of making a difference to the lives of farmers.

Agri-GIS is a specialised GIS Application that will enable decision-making for farmers, government agencies, support agencies, etc. vis-à-vis crop-lands and for the cropping sector – especially during pre-, within- and post-harvest stages. The Agri-GIS would be a model GIS application that would address decision needs of different stake-holders in Odisha – farmers, government officers and other groups. The larger challenge is to build a scalable model for implementation across the country subsequently.

The final aim is to be able to deploy a GIS based Farmer’s Advisory in 532 villages of S Odisha – covering about 20k farmers and almost 80k cadasters. The advisory is targeted for 3 times – Pre-sowing Advisory; In Crop-season; End of Crop Season AND followed by an intense Post-harvest Analytics – comparative of past years data and latest data.

Farm level aggregation and Disaggregation of crop and socio-economic parameters; assess lack of information of suitability of beneficiary land for various crops; assess Water Availability; help beneficiary on nutrition management; provide information on Production Technologies Available, Financing options, Insurance options, Access to inputs and Marketable Lots, etc. Local and regional policy integration into analysis is also to be undertaken.

Some of the important analytics products would include real-time farm level aggregation and disaggregation of crop and socio-economic parameters; assess lack of information of suitability of beneficiary land for various crops; assess Water Availability; help beneficiary on nutrition management; provide information on Production Technologies Available, Financing options, Insurance options, Access to inputs and Marketable Lots, etc. Local and regional policy integration into analysis is also to be undertaken.

The benefit of the C-SAG Agri-GIS model stems on a “single, common, standardized, robust and reliable” and “geotagged database” – serving farmer beneficiary DECISIONS – addressing his individual social, economic and resources queries; administrators DECSIONS – addressing best local-level policy and government interventions.
