C-SAG and Orissa University for Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), Bhubaneshwar, along with Tata Trusts and in association with Government of Odisha, organised a one day workshop on “GIS BASED FARMER ADVISORIES” on May 30, 2018 at Biju Patnaik Conference Hall, OUAT. The workshop was organised as part of the consultation process of Agri-GIS, which is being developed by C-SAG in S Odisha. The main aim was to engage and consult with agriculture experts, state government officials and invited farmers of S Odisha for the Farmer Advisory that is being developed under Agri-GIS.

About 100 expert participants from OUAT faculty, Govt. of Odisha Agriculture Department, Orissa State Remote Sensing Centre (ORSAC), India Meteorological Department (IMD), ICAR, Bhubaneshwar, NBSSLUP, C-SAG experts, Tata Trusts experts, other NGOs and many other agencies were involved in the discussions. About 10-12 farmers from S Odisha districts of Kandhamal, Kalahandi and Rayagadha were also involved – they provided grass-root and direct inputs on their farming activities and also need for information for their agriculture activities. Experts also debated on the design and content of pre-sowing, in-crop season and pre-harvest Advisories that C-SAG is developing – valuable inputs on content were provided.

In the inaugural session, Prof S Pasupalak, Vice Chancellor of OUAT delivered the Presidential Address; Mr Surabh Garg, Principal Secretary, Agriculture Department of Odisha Government delivered Chief Guest Address; Dr Mukund Rao, Chief Executive of C-SAG delivered the Keynote Address and Dr S Ayappan, Former DG-ICAR and Co-Chair of C-SAG Agri-GIS Technical Advisory Committee delivered the Opening Address. Dr SC Bhan, Addl DG-IMD and Prof Pravat Roul, Dean (Extension), OUAT also spoke in the inaugural session.

Experts from C-SAG made presentations on Agri-GIS and the Farmer Advisory and also outlined the trial Advisory that has been generated for 12 plots/cadastres in S Odisha. Key presentations on the Image Analytics; Social and Economic Indexing Analysis and Met data Analytics were also made by C-SAG experts. Tata Trusts experts spoke on social and economic data collection and analysis and also on Plan for Advisory Dissemination process. OUAT experts spoke on the extension and how Agri-GIS can become a part of KVKs. The invited farmers outlined the key issues of farming and their overall development and highlighted their information needs and expectations from Agri-GIS.
